Winn-Dixie Teams With Flumist™ To Ring In The New Year With Safe, Affordable Flu Vaccinations

JACKSONVILLE, FL, December 26, 2003 -- Winn-Dixie (NYSE: WIN) announced today that select Winn-Dixie, Thriftway and SaveRite pharmacies will offer the FluMist™ nasal spray, beginning Monday, December 29th.

The vaccinations, which will be administered by a licensed pharmacist, will be available during the stores' regular pharmacy hours. The cost is $59 per vaccination. Aetna and Cigna have agreed to assist their members with the cost of FluMist. Policyholders should call the companies for more information. The treatment is not covered under either Medicaid or Medicare.

"FluMist can be an important preventative measure against the flu," said Winn-Dixie's Vice President of Pharmacy Fred Ottolino. "With flu shots in very limited supply, the nasal spray offers a great alternative that we're pleased to offer our customers." Customers are advised to consult with their family doctor before receiving any vaccination.

According to Wyeth Vaccines, FluMist™, Influenza Virus Vaccine Live, Intranasal, is indicated for active immunization for the prevention of disease caused by influenza A and B viruses in healthy children and adolescents, 5 to 17 years of age, and healthy adults, 18 to 49 years of age. FluMist is not indicated for immunization of individuals less than 5 years of age, or 50 years of age and older. FluMist is delivered into the nose, where the flu virus can enter the body. It is different from the flu shot because it contains weakened live influenza viruses instead of killed viruses. Both vaccines contain the three strains of flu virus that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has selected as the most likely to cause influenza in the coming flu season.
