JACKSONVILLE, FL (April 20, 2005) — Shoppers can help lay the foundation for better communities and brighter futures for families in need through the next six weeks whenever they purchase any of several Kellogg’s brand products at any Winn-Dixie store throughout the Southeast.
Beginning today and running through June 1, Kellogg’s will donate 25 cents to Habitat for Humanity each time a Winn-Dixie customer buys two of any type of Kellogg’s, Keebler, Cheez-It, Eggo or Kashi cereal products. The money raised will help fund construction of a two-family duplex in Atlantic Beach, Fla., a suburb of Winn-Dixie’s headquarters city of Jacksonville.
“Together we can unite as neighbors to help make a lasting difference in the lives of families in need by helping create quality housing in our communities one house at a time,” said Judy Holland, neighborhood marketing director for Winn-Dixie Stores, Inc. “Together with Kellogg’s, we’re already planning to help fund a Habitat house in Miami later this year, and hope to expand this program to other communities throughout the Southeast where we have stores.”
Dollars raised during the six weeks will have a double payoff — the Habitat house will be a two-family duplex. Each home in the duplex will be 1,250 square feet, with four bedrooms and two bathrooms, and include all appliances. Both homes will be sold for a $500 down payment and a 25-year, interest-free mortgage.
“Who would have thought that buying your everyday groceries could help lift someone into a better life and achieve the American dream of home ownership?” asked Ralph Marcello, executive director for Beaches Habitat, the local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity building the homes. “Every bit of community support we receive has such a tremendous impact on the lives of these families. It enables them to start over by literally building a new and improved way of life.”
Winn-Dixie and Kellogg’s associates also will volunteer their time to help build the homes, beginning in June. The Ruiz-Ramirez and Cruz-Fontanez families, who will move into their homes in late September, each will contribute 300 hours of “sweat equity” by helping in the building process. They also will be making color and cabinetry choices for their new residences. Their duplex will be the third of nine to be built in a planned subdivision of Habitat residences.
“This is a tangible way to, along with our customers, make a positive impact in this community,” said Lorrie Brocato, account manager for Kellogg’s Snacks. “By working together and partnering with Winn-Dixie, we can make a big difference in bettering our communities.”
