Weyerhaeuser volunteers, grant money, provide meals for seniors

(March 8, 2005 – Beaverton, OR.)  The joyful energy that Yvonne Muir brought to her Meals-On-Wheels deliveries just before Christmas abruptly shifted to alarm when she and her coworkers from Weyerhaeuser discovered a frail, elderly woman trapped on the floor in her home. The woman, a regular on Yvonne’s Meals-On-Wheels delivery route, had fallen the evening before.  She had been lying on the floor for 18 hours, cold and in pain.

“Normally our deliveries are full of fun and good conversation,” said Yvonne, “so this caught us off guard. We came to bring a hot meal and kind word, but we ended up doing a lot more. It was good fortune all around that we showed up when we did.”

Muir, Kay Carter and other Weyerhaeuser volunteers were making their weekly deliveries to 18 senior citizens in Beaverton and Aloha. They learned later that the elderly woman was not seriously injured, although shaken and weak for several days after the incident.

In their “real jobs,” the Weyerhaeuser employees run the world’s largest pre-print press at 23950 NW Huffman Road in Hillsboro. Part of the company’s local printing and packaging network, they work with retail customers to design and manufacture packaging for food, beverages and consumer goods.

Weyerhaeuser employees who volunteer to deliver Meals-On-Wheels are Steve Perkins, Jan Cleiland, Barry Greig and Joe Bridges as well as Carter and Muir.

To recognize the volunteer commitment from these employees, Weyerhaeuser leaders have awarded a $2,500 grant to help Loaves & Fishes Centers provide meals for Asian seniors throughout the Portland area. The grant will help the Fook Lok Loaves & Fishes Center in Southeast Portland serve Asian meals five days a week to Korean and Laotian populations.

Since 1970, Loaves & Fishes Centers has provided a nutritional and social lifeline through daily Meals-On-Wheels delivery to homebound seniors. The nonprofit, nonsectarian agency also operates 15 meal sites in Multnomah and Washington counties. With the help of close to 6,000 volunteers, the organization now serves about 4,000 meals each day – that’s nearly 1 million meals a year.

The mission of the Weyerhaeuser Company Foundation is to improve the quality of life in communities where Weyerhaeuser has a presence.  Since 1948, the Foundation has directed more than $173 million to the communities where Weyerhaeuser employees work, live and play.  Nationwide, the Foundation's annual philanthropic budget totals $10 million.
