Vulcan’s Nick Lewis Receives Blasting Excellence Award From Illinois Department Of Natural Resources/Company Receives Industry Leadership Award

(Chicago, Ill.) — Vulcan Materials Company (NYSE: VMC) announced today that Nick Lewis received the 2004 Blasting Excellence Award from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR). Vulcan also announced that it received the IDNR’s Industry Leadership Award for 2004.
Mr. Lewis is manager of drilling and blasting services with Vulcan’s Midwest Division, and a technical advisor on blasting issues Company wide. Mr. Lewis has mining engineering and MBA degrees from the University of Alabama. He joined Vulcan in 2001.
The Blasting Excellence Award is presented annually by IDNR to the individual who has demonstrated excellence in his or her approach to blasting. The annual Industry Leadership Award recognizes a company that has demonstrated leadership within the industry by consistently going above and beyond the fundamental regulatory requirements.
In presenting the awards, Willard Pierce of the IDNR said, “Nick’s knowledge and expertise in the art and science of blasting is among the very best our industry has to offer. Vulcan is using blasting products and techniques that are some of the best in the country. They are on the cutting edge of today’s technology.” Mr. Lewis commented, “I’m proud to receive this award but I’m even more pleased that Vulcan has been recognized as a company for the hard work that our employees do every day.”
