(Los Angeles, Calif.) – Vulcan Materials Company (NYSE: VMC) announced today that it has received the 2003/2004 Achievement in Reducing Emissions Award from the Antelope Valley Air Quality Management District.

The Award recognizes industries, organizations, schools and individuals that have made outstanding contributions to local air quality by reducing and/or preventing air pollution within the Antelope Valley. Vulcan was recognized for its environmental stewardship and use of best practices in controlling dust at the Company’s Palmdale stone and asphalt facility in Littlerock.

Ron McAbee, president of Vulcan's Western Division, said, "We work hard to demonstrate our steadfast commitment to environmental stewardship and, where possible, move beyond mere compliance to the level of leadership. My sincere thanks goes to the employees who have earned this distinction for themselves and our Company.”

The Antelope Valley Air Pollution Control District is one of 35 local air districts throughout California charged with regulating stationary sources of air pollution. The District is mandated by State and Federal regulations to implement and enforce air pollution rules and regulations. The District is bordered by the Kern County line on the north, the San Gabriel Mountains to the south, the San Bernardino County line to the east and the Sierra Nevada Mountains on the west. With approximately 320,000 residents, the Antelope Valley Air Pollution Control District ranks tenth in population among the State’s 35 air districts.

Vulcan Materials Company, a member of the S&P 500 index, is a producer of industrial materials with significant positions in two industries. It is the nation's foremost producer of construction aggregates, a major producer of other construction materials, and a leading chemicals manufacturer, supplying chlor-alkali and other industrial chemicals.
