Sunoco Issues 2004 Health, Environment and Safety Report

PHILADELPHIA, May 12, 2005 -- Sunoco, Inc. (NYSE: SUN) said today that it has issued its 2004 Health, Environment and Safety (HES) Report, marking this as the thirteenth successive year that the Company has publicly reported the results of its performance. In 1993 Sunoco became the first Fortune 500 company to endorse the Ceres Principles, a 10-point code of environmental conduct that includes public reporting of environmental performance. Sunoco believes that excellence in health, environment and safety performance go hand-in-hand with operations reliability and is a leading indicator of the Company’s financial strength.

The Report provides detailed HES performance data for Sunoco’s business units and this year provides additional data and information for individual Company facilities. It includes anecdotes that highlight various Company HES activities including Sunoco’s involvement with Community Advisory Panels (CAPs), reinforces the importance of training for improving HES performance, and talks about challenges to Sunoco over the next three to five years. Ceres, a unique coalition of institutional investors, environmental organizations and public interest groups, is a worldwide leader in standardized corporate environmental reporting through the Global Reporting Initiative.
