The Sunoco Story
The story of Sunoco Inc began in 1886, when two partners in “The Peoples
Natural Gas Company” of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, decided to diversify
their business. The partners paid $4,500 for two oil leases near Lima, Ohio.
Within a few years the company began to emerge as one of Ohio’s leading
suppliers of crude oil. In 1890 the company became the Sun Oil Company of Ohio
and was producing, transporting, and storing oil as well as refining, shipping,
and marketing petroleum products. Since then the company has only continued
to expand and grow, until now Sunoco Inc. is a recognized brand name and one
of the biggest private carriers and privately owned companies.
Sunoco Inc, which is now headquartered in Philadelphia Pennsylvania, is a leading
manufacturer, marketer, and distributor of petroleum and petrochemical products.
Sunoco operates five domestic oil refineries, markets gasoline to around 4,528
retail outlets all across the united states, and has 34 product terminals for
over 4,500 miles of crude oil and refined product pipeline.
As such, Sunoco is one of the largest independent refiner-marketers in the
United States. Sunoco’s annual sales average five billion pounds, much
of which contributes to the production of fibers, plastics, film, and resins.
Sunoco has also patented a technology for manufacturing high-quality coke for
use in the steel industry.
Sunoco was already the authorized gasoline manufacturer for more than 30 racieng
series, but early in 2004, Sunoco became the Official Fuel of NASCAR. The partnership
with NASCAR is a crowning achievement, representing Sunoco’s commitment
to excellent quality.
