Rite Aid Donates Model Pharmacy To Provide Students At University Of Kentucky College Of Pharmacy With 'Real Life' Experience
Rite Aid President to Dedicate $60,000 State-of-the-Art Model Pharmacy
Camp Hill, PA (November 8, 2000)-As the number of prescriptions being filled in the United States will nearly double by the year 2005, Rite Aid is helping prepare future pharmacists gain real life experience with the donation of a new state-of-the-art model pharmacy to the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy. The model pharmacy, valued at $60,000, was donated by Rite Aid to provide College of Pharmacy students with hands-on professional pharmacy experience in a college setting.
Rite Aid President and Chief Operating Officer Mary Sammons and Eric Sorkin, senior vice president, pharmacy will visit the College on November 9th at 10:00 a.m. to celebrate the completion of the model pharmacy. They will address pharmacy students on the importance of the profession of pharmacy as well as participate in a dedication and ribbon cutting.
"Pharmacists are continually ranked as one of the most trusted professionals and are in high demand due to the increased number of prescriptions being filled. This unique and innovative learning environment will not only attract potential candidates to UK's College of Pharmacy but will also provide them with practical, hands-on learning experience vital in today's pharmacy workplace," said Sammons.
The model pharmacy, now operational, is designed exactly like a real life Rite Aid pharmacy to provide students with an innovative, hands-on learning experience in a retail pharmacy setting. The model pharmacy enables the college to teach prescription processing, quality control and quality improvement strategies, and appropriate supervision of technical personnel.
Rite Aid also donated $15,000 worth of product including vitamins, herbs, over-the-counter remedies, and diagnostic and screening products for use in the pharmacy.
"The UK College of Pharmacy appreciates this generous support from Rite Aid. Their efforts have resulted in a greatly enhanced learning environment that provides our students with this opportunity to further develop their patient care skills," said Kenneth Roberts, Ph.D., Dean of the UK College of Pharmacy.
The UK College of Pharmacy, one of five colleges in the UK Chandler Medical Center, focuses on the education of outstanding pharmacists, basic and applied research in the pharmaceutical sciences, and the advancement of pharmaceutical care delivery and public service. The College consistently has been ranked third in the nation by U.S. News and World Report in their annual publication highlighting top academic programs.
