2003 Sale of Champions “Got There” and Broke Records

Sedalia, MO – August 17, 2003 – Youth in Agriculture Day was celebrated Saturday, August 16 at the 2003 Missouri State Fair, with the highlight being a record setting auction at the traditional Sale of Champions. Over $75,500 was raised to benefit Missouri youth involved in agriculture.

The first animal to be auctioned off at the Sale of Champions was the Grand Champion Steer, shown by Claire Martin of Curryville, MO. The 1,295-lb. crossbred brought $16,000, breaking the old record $15,500 from last year. Missourians for Kit Bond purchased the steer. Hometown financial support was provided by Scholfield Veterinary Supply, Inc.; Feeders Grain; Farm Bureau; David & Mary Jane Hobbs; Pike Feeds; Preston & Samantha Graves; Max McCuen; US Bank; TransOva Genetics; Habeger Show Cattle; and Vita-Ferm.

The Grand Champion Barrow was next in line, shown by Jordan Scotten of Nevada. Her barrow brought $12,000, also breaking the record by $1500. Edward Jones Investment Offices including: Roger Bennett, Trenton; Larry Richardson, Sedalia; Scott Morse, Harrisonville; George Olson, Macon; Diane Dudenhoffer, Marshall; David Reid, Higginsville; Denver Lionberger, Hermann; George Morse, Odessa; Paul Kissick, Kirksville; John Muller, Marshall; Mark Saunders, Monroe City; Bill Kueny, Boonville; Alan Kimbel, Warrenton; David Clapp, Mexico; Lon Luckert, Brookfield; E.H. Brauer, Shelbina; David Harris, Cameron; Mark Harrison, Chillicothe. Edward Jones Corporate also contributed as the primary purchaser of Jordan’s 272 lb barrow. Hometown support was provided by Heritage State Bank; Lathrop Construction; Barton’s of Nevada; DB’s Del-Way Drive-In; Gast Cattle Co.; Show-tec, ADM Alliance Nutrition, Inc.

The third animal to be auctioned was the Grand Champion Lamb. The lamb, owned by Kurt Fischer of New Cambria, was purchased for $8,000 by Bank Midwest breaking his previous record set last year by $250. Kurt had hometown support from Cupp Chevrolet; Merchants & Farmers Bank; Bank of New Cambria; Regional Missouri Bank; and Shelter Insurance.

Web & Sons of Sedalia purchased the Grand Champion Meat Pen of Rabbits for $2,500. These three New Zealand-White rabbits were shown by Ryan Missey of O’Fallon. This was Ryan’s second year here at the Sale of champions. The auction price set another new Sale of Champions record for the Missouri State Fair by $300. Hometown support was provided by Central Eastern MO Rabbit Club; St. Charles Co. Rabbit Project; and Steve Nadler.

The final Grand Champion to be auctioned off was the Grand Champion Market Pen of Birds. These Cornish Cross broiler chickens, shown by Grace Madsen of Carthage, MO, brought $4,000. They were purchased by Clayton Agri-Marketing of Jefferson City, represented by Tony Clayton, and his winning bid set another new record. Grace’s hometown support was provided by Matt Denney Construction; Whitehead Farm & Feed; Midwest Ag; Sam Madsen; and Reed Construction.

The next round of animals started with the 1,220-lb. Reserve Champion Steer. Missouri Charolais Breeders Association, represented by David Johansen of Syracuse, purchased the steer, shown by Kyra Hawley of Milan, MO. It was a Charolais that weighed 1240 lbs. Kyra had additional support from the following Charolais Association Members and county individuals: Barbara McHargue; Randy’s Auto Care; Sayre & Associates; MFA Agri Services; Premium Standard Farms; Hoffman & Reed; Oxendale Realty; Green City Food Mkt.; Roger Geater; Ayers Livestock Farm; 5J Charolais; Peterson Farms Charolais; Big Creek Charolais; Windy Hill Charolais; Hankins Farms; Riverdale Land & Cattle; MBS Charolais; Missouri Charolais Breeders Assoc.; Milan Livestock Auction; North Missouri Tire & Service; State Farm Insurance; Milan Standard; Great Western Bank; Green City Livestock Mkt.; Eitel Realty & Auction Service; North Central MO Elec. Coop.; Yellow Creek Realty; Fowler Elevator; and Phillips & Spencer Attorneys. The total purchase of $11,500 was yet another new record high for the Missouri State Fair beating the old one by $500.

Jacob Heimer of Taylor, MO, with the Reserve Grand Champion Barrow, broke the seventh record of the afternoon. The barrow, a crossbred weighing 269 lbs., was also sold to University of Missouri – Columbia Independent Aggies & Tai Shin Foods & Frozen Industrial, Inc. USA, located in Pleasant Hope, MO. Hometown support was provided by Haden Motorsports; Don & Elaine Hoerr; Thornhill Real Estate; Heimer Construction; Pike Feeds; Agri-Med Vet Clinic; Krigbaum Trailer & Equipment; Farm Credit Services; Grimm & Schlipman Financial Group; Norman & Sally Haerr; Albert & Edith Joos; B&S Insurance; Landmark Irrigation; Pioneer Seeds; Bank of Quincy; Crows Hybrid Seed Corn; Bob Grimm Buick & GMC; and Show-tec, ADM Alliance Nutrition, Inc., for a total of $11,000, a difference of $2,250 from the last years record set by his brother, Jesse.

The Reserve Champion Lamb, shown by Nathan Simler of Kirksville, brought $6,000 and was purchased by Edward Jones & University of Missouri – Columbia Independent Aggies. Nathan also had hometown support from Swaim Farms; Simler’s Kennel; Lovegreen Ford/Chrysler; Senator John Cauthorn; McDonalds; US Bank; Renaissance Nutrition; NEMO Feeds; Mathes Suffolks; Travis-Noe Funeral Home; Full House Show Lambs; Farm Bureau; and State Representative Bob Behnen. Nathan & his lamb also broke last year’s record by $500.

Amy Carlstead sold her Reserve Champion Meat Pen of Rabbits to American Family Insurance, represented by Jerry Reid of Sedalia, for a ninth Sale of Champions record of $2,000, a difference of $200 from the record set last year. Amy’s hometown supporters included Farmers Coop; First Federal Bank; MFA Agri Service; and C&R Central Office.

The last exhibitor to sell was Simon Estes of Richmond, MO, with the Reserve Champion Market Pen of Birds. His Reserve Grand Champion Market Pen of Birds, which were broiler chickens, were sold to L.D. Enterprises of Warsaw & Marks Bros. Vending of Sedalia, for yet another Missouri State Fair Sale of Champions record total of $2,500. His hometown supporters were Richmond Texaco; Swafford’s Ford; Mike & Vickie McCalley; Gill & Grain Company; Ray Co. Fair Board; Orrick Farm Service; Richmond Chamber of Commerce; Richmond FFA Chapter; and Richmond FFA Alumni.

The very last item of the day auctioned was a Silver Plated Limited Edition Commemorative Belt Buckle. Dennis and Janice Klenke, of Smithton Industries, were once again the buckle purchasers. The buckle set the eleventh new sale record bringing $1,500. The buckle was then given to Norwood Creason, Missouri State Fair Commissioner of Braymer, MO, as a gift of recognition.

Proceeds from the annual sale benefit both the winners and the Missouri State Fair Scholarship Foundation. Due to the generous support of Youth in Agriculture sponsors, the Missouri State Fair is able to award scholarships to Missouri youth pursuing an education in agriculture-related fields.

Youth involved in agriculture received a special discount on admission and carnival rides by picking up a coupon from their local County Extension Offices. Numerous activities took place celebrating the accomplishments of Missouri’s youth and their participation in the Fair through 4-H and FFA.
