Chicken Changeover

Converting a chicken slaughter plant to a further-processing facility could cost jobs at Pilgrim’s Pride.

Pittsburg, Texas Pilgrim's Pride Corp., said converting its chicken-processing plant in Broadway, Virginia, to a prepared foods facility will result in the loss of approximately 300 jobs. The company plans to minimize the number of displaced workers through attrition and by offering positions at its plant in nearby Moorefield, West Virginia.
Approximately 1,300 people currently work at the Broadway plant. The company says the move from lower-valued uncooked fresh products to higher-value convenient, prepared foods reflects consumer demand.
Broadway plant manager Bob Bahr said that while the decision was difficult because of the number of people affected, it's an “excellent” move for the long-term success of the plant. Pilgrim’s Pride plans to begin supplying prepared food products on May 29, according to an Associated Press report.
