J. R. Simplot Company History & Mission
With annual sales of over $3 billion, the J. R. Simplot Company is one of the largest privately held firms in the country. J. R. “Jack” Simplot founded the company more than 70 years ago. A high school dropout and independent thinker, Simplot saw great potential in vegetable dehydrators and was soon marketing dehydrated potatoes and onions to the US military. His business only grew, and by the end of WWII J. R. Simplot was the largest potato shipper in the country. From this small one-man operation the company has grown into a global food and agribusiness conglomerate. Its products are sold throughout the United States and the world. While it has expanded to produce all varieties of products, the J. R. Simplot company is probably most famous for its dehydrated French fried potatoes, which it markets to such companies as McDonald’s and Burger King.
J. R. Simplot is careful to maintain a reputation for community involvement and environmental responsibility. J. R. Simplot is a private carrier, with a massive distribution network for its fresh potato production, but the company also employs 3PL’s (Third Party Logistics Providers) to handle some aspects of the dehydrated potato distribution. The J. R. Simplot mission statement “Bringing the Earth’s Resources to Life” encompasses both the company’s purpose and greatest responsibility. J. R. Simplot is devoted to enhancing and sustaining not only natural resources, but human resources as well.
