H.E. Butt Grocery Co. Partners with HCCS for a $500,000 Job-Training Grant from TWC

February 14, 2005

AUSTIN — The Houston area workforce will benefit from a $500,000 job-training grant from the Texas Workforce Commission’s (TWC) Self-Sufficiency Fund, which helps individuals transition from public assistance back into the work force. This grant will be used to upgrade 250 incumbent and create 250 new jobs for the Houston-area H.E. Butt Grocery Co. These 500 jobs will pay an average hourly wage of $10.88, upon completion of training, to workers in the customer service, meat market, produce, floral and grocery departments. “I was proud to author the legislation establishing the Self-Sufficiency Fund. It is through innovative grant programs like the Self-Sufficiency Fund that Texans are able to receive valuable workforce skills and open doors to new opportunity,” said state Rep. Garnet Coleman. “This grant will give jobs to 500 Texans whose families will also benefit, along with these Texas employers who will attain a highly skilled workforce, making them more competitive. I congratulate the Houston-area H.E. Butt Grocery Co. for making this grant possible.” “Thanks to this grant, H.E.B. will be able to train 500 residents in the greater Houston area for both new and better-paying jobs,” said Sen. Rodney Ellis. “I applaud the Texas Workforce Commission, the Houston Community College System and this employer for this partnership that will strengthen Houston’s economy and benefit hard-working Houston families.” “Workforce development and skills training are at the very heart of economic development,” said TWC’s Travis Weaver. “Through the successful partnership of public education and private industry, this grant will provide skills training to create or upgrade hundreds of jobs in this area. “In Fiscal Year (FY) 2004, TWC awarded 12 Self-Sufficiency Fund grants, which funded more than 4,545jobs. The jobs paid an average hourly wage of $7.88. The grants, which totaled $5,402,486, benefited 58 Texas employers. The Legislature appropriated $2.9 million to the Self-Sufficiency Fund for each year of the FY 2004-05 biennium
