60 Arlington Companies Named "Best Workplaces for Commuters"
One-third of companies recognized in the region located in Arlington
ARLINGTON, Va. – Sixty Arlington County companies – about one-third of all employers honored in the region – have been named among the 2004 'Best Workplaces for Commuters.'
The designation was given to 187 Greater Washington Region employers who offer their employees outstanding traffic-reducing commuter benefits such as employer-provided transit passes, vanpool subsidies, bike commuter facilities, onsite daycare and telework programs. The companies were recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and its Greater Washington region coalition partners at a ceremony today at Discovery Communications, Inc., in Silver Spring, Md.
“I’d like to thank Arlington’s recognized employers for making our County stand out as not only one of the best in the Washington Region but one of the best nationwide,” said Dennis Leach, Arlington’s Transportation Division director. (A roster of the Arlington companies recognized appears below.)
This is the second year that Arlington employers have appeared on this national list.
Arlington Transportation Partners (ATP), representing Arlington County’s Department of Environmental Services, Division of Transportation, was instrumental in qualifying Arlington’s Best Workplaces for Commuters. ATP educates employers and promotes the benefits of employer-sponsored transportation programs in Arlington.
“Organizations that offer their employees choices about how they get to work continually report improved employee recruitment, morale and retention,” said Lois DeMeester, executive director of Arlington Transportation Partners. Employers are attracted to the advantages of providing transit benefits for their employees for varied reasons.
In their own words:
“Boeing is constantly trying to recruit the best and the brightest,” said John Hamman of the company’s Crystal City office. “Providing transit benefits is a necessary tool for us to remain a competitive employer.”
Added Bill Brakefield, Jr. of Westfield Realty: “Since we operate parking garages and can provide parking for free it was expensive to make the decision to provide our employees with a commuter benefit. But we finally could no longer ignore our area’s abysmal air quality and worsening traffic congestion.”
Best Workplaces for Commuters
The Best Workplaces for Commuters list recognizes employers that are leaders in offering superior commuter benefits, such as subsidized transit passes, vanpool subsidies, or telework programs, to their employees. Like the list of FORTUNE 100 Best Companies to Work For, employers are recognized for their excellence and leadership. It’s a win-win for everyone: employers earn prestige from being recognized as one of the best, employees enjoy more options in balancing their personal and work life, and communities benefit from reduced traffic congestion and cleaner air.
Regional Best Workplaces for Commuters Coalition
The Greater Washington Region’s Best Workplaces for Commuters Coalition is comprised of leading government and business organizations in the Washington, D.C., area working to reduce traffic congestion, improve air quality, and make commuting less stressful and more affordable. This coalition includes Commuter Connections, Greater Washington Board of Trade, Metropolitan Washington Work/Life Coalition, National Capital Planning Commission, U.S. Department of Transportation, EPA, U.S. General Services Administration and the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority. Several local jurisdictions have also pledged their commitment to the campaign including Alexandria Rideshare, Arlington Transportation Partners, Fairfax County and Montgomery County Commuter Services.

Arlington, Va., is a world-class residential, business and tourist location that was originally part of the “10 miles square” parcel of land surveyed in 1791 to be the Nation's Capital. It is the geographically smallest self-governing county in the United States, occupying slightly less than 26 square miles. Arlington maintains a rich variety of stable neighborhoods, quality schools and enlightened land use, and received the Environmental Protection Agency’s highest award for “Smart Growth” in 2002. Home to some of the most influential organizations in the world – including the Pentagon – Arlington stands out as one of America’s preeminent places to live, visit and do business.
