Delhaize America, ONE Transport Network
With over 1,500 stores in 16 states, Delhaize America is one of the leading
supermarket operators in the United States. The American counterpart to Delhaize
Company in Belgium, Delhaize America owns and operates the chains Food Lion,
Hannaford Bros, Kash n' Karry and Harveys. It is through these different localized
banners that Delhaize America is able to tarket specific needs and markets.
Delhaize America is careful to maintain ties to the community and its local
customers by organizing in this decentralized, personally focused distribution
network.
Delhaize America employs approximately 105,000 full-time and part-time associates
up and down the East Coast. Distribution is a major part of Delhaize America’s
system, and it participates in the One Network Enterprises (ONE), which improves
dispatch efficiency along the supply network. Suppliers and carriers use the
same standardized tools and processes to work with any retailer on the network.
Computer messaging systems organize dispatch schedules instead of personnel
on telephones. Carriers coordinate pick up and delivery schedules through an
advanced computer system, facilitating transport because both processes are
done using the same network and tools.
Each of Delhaize America’s grocery store chains hires private carriers
to drive their trucks. Each of these chains has the feel of a small, personal
environment backed by the strength of a major international company. The strong
company and advanced distribution network make Delhaize America stores an exciting
place to work.
