Twin Innovation at Aral: Two New High-Performance Fuels

Initially Aral will offer both fuels at 450 filling stations in large urban areas. A further 150 stations will be added every month, and during the first half of 2005 all Aral stations will be converted to stock these fuels.
Ultimate 100 will replace the current offering, Aral SuperPlus, while Ultimate Diesel will be on offer to motorists in addition to the successful Aral SuperDiesel. Aral will then be offering its customers two types of diesel fuels and three types of gasoline at all its filling stations.
Arals research and development department fundamentally redesigned both fuels. These fuels are blended to newly developed formulas and from the highest-grade product streams in the companys own refineries, separate to other produced fuels. This is then delivered to Arals filling stations via the companys own logistics system.
The fundamental properties of the fuels provide a combination which previously seemed impossible: Ultimate 100 and Ultimate Diesel provide both improved performance - better acceleration and lower consumption PLUS reduced emissions.
Together with the German TÜV (Technical Inspection Authority), Arals Bochum-based R & D department carried out a fleet test with around 90 passenger cars and four motorcycles in order to find out what exactly the new fuels were capable of. The vehicles tested were a representative cross-section of vehicles on German Roads from the VW Golf to the Porsche GT3. A cross section of vehicle and engine technologies were represented in these tests, and over a million test kilometres were driven on test benches, roads and test areas.
The test results:
On average, over all the vehicles tested, the new Ultimate 100 fuel provided 4 per cent (up to 10 per cent) more performance and 2.5 per cent (up to 8.5 per cent) better acceleration in comparison with other typical 95-octane premium gasoline on the market. It also provided an average fuel saving of 3 per cent (up to 6 per cent) and reduces hydrocarbon (HC) emissions by an average of 8.5 per cent and nitrogen oxide (NOx) by an average of 9.5 per cent.
In comparison with other typical diesel fuels on the market, and on average over all vehicles tested, the new Ultimate Diesel also achieved a 5 per cent improvement in performance (up to 13 per cent) and provided better acceleration (4.5 per cent on average, and up to 11 per cent). At the same time vehicles using Ultimate achieved fuel savings of 2 per cent on average and significantly reduced noxious emissions: 27 per cent less unburned hydrocarbons (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO).
With its Ultimate fuels, Aral has redefined the state of the art for both diesel and gasoline. Moreover, both fuels are the only products available on the filling station market, which meet the requirements of the World Wide Fuel Charter (WWFC). In this charter the global automobile industry defines its quality standards for fuels an important pre-condition for the development of engines, which are even more efficient and environmentally friendly.
The new top-grade fuels have a price premium. In comparison with Aral Super. Ultimate 100 will cost 10-12 euro cents more, and Ultimate Diesel 8-10 cents more. However, the Ultimate range offers consumers the clear advantage of combining hitherto conflicting performance indicators in one fuel: more performance, lower emissions and lower consumption. Customers can choose: in the case of gasoline as well as diesel, which fuel quality they prefer.
Market studies carried out by Aral show that quality-conscious motorists no longer look solely at engine performance. Increasingly, they take environmental aspects into consideration. Although they do want maximum engine performance from a top-grade fuel, they also say that as little fuel as possible should be burnt in the process, because it is highly taxed, and exhaust gases should remain as clean as possible (more performance, lower emissions).
