Boise, Id.- Albertsons (NYSE: ABS) announced today it will launch "fresh rescue" programs in each of its operating areas by the end of the year to provide local food banks dairy and meat products that are crucial for a healthy diet but often the most difficult for them to acquire. Albertsons also said it has joined with General Mills to contribute $200,000 to enable food banks to start upgrading local facilities to accommodate the need for timely product movement and temperature controlled storage space for fresh products. Albertsons' partnerships with local food banks around the country also will help raise an additional estimated $100,000 this year.

"Albertsons' leadership in providing top quality fresh and prepared foods will provide millions of at-risk families with the healthy, nutritious food they need. We are grateful for their ongoing commitment to providing not only more food but better delivery systems to our network," said Bob Forney, CEO and president of America's Second Harvest.

By the end of the year, Albertsons said all of its divisions will have processes in place to enable donations of limited-shelf life meat and dairy products to local food banks of Americas Second Harvest, the nation's largest hunger-relief organization. Albertsons stores throughout its 37-state operating area already support scores of food banks through on-going fundraising initiatives, associate volunteer activities and the donation of non-perishable, reclaimed product.

"Albertsons is committed to working hard to ensure no child goes hungry in America," said Larry Johnston, Albertsons chairman, CEO and president. "Our commitment to make possible the donation of fresh food products is one more way that we can help families throughout the country live healthy and productive lives. As a partner of America's Second Harvest, we are pleased to increase our commitment of our time, money and quality food products in support of the outstanding goals of one of the nation's vital organizations.
