Giant Food Stores (headquartered in Carlisle, PA), a member of the Ahold USA family of retail food chains, has been recognized as an "Outstanding Corporation" during the National Philanthropy Day Celebration held by the Central Pennsylvania Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP).
Giant was nominated for this award by Children's Miracle Network at Penn State Children's Hospital, located in Hershey, Pa., for the long-standing support Giant has provided to them over the years. Annually, Giant holds an "Our Kids" golf tournament to benefit five Children's Miracle Network-affiliated hospitals, including Penn State Children's Hospital. The Tournament is held on a single day on nine Hershey area golf courses, making it the largest one-day golf tournament to benefit Children's Miracle Network in the nation. Giant also sells paper candles during the holidays and paper miracle balloons in the spring to benefit Children's Miracle Network. Giant is the largest single contributor to Children's Miracle Network at Penn State Children's Hospital.
In addition to Giant's support to Children's Miracle Network, Giant's nomination was also based on the various other community organizations that Giant supports including the Jake Gittlen Memorial Cancer Institute, "Bags to Benches" program for schools, the Multiple Sclerosis Society and Giant's corporate-wide United Way Campaign. Through Giant's community involvement, millions of dollars have been donated to these and many other community organizations.
The Association of Fundraising Professionals is an international organization with 26,000 members and 170 chapters worldwide. The Central Pennsylvania Chapter has nearly 200 members from throughout the region.
