Ahold USA is a subsidiary of Royal Ahold of the Netherlands, though almost 60% of Ahold worldwide sales are generated in the United States.. In the United States, Ahold has food retail and e-commerce activities. Ahold operates over 1,600 stores grouped in six operating companies along the U.S. eastern seaboard. The retail stores combined serve approximately 20 million customers every week. Ahold also operates Peapod an e-commerce business headquartered in Chicago. Ahold USA employs over 170,000 people.

It organizes a massive distribution network between its six companies: Shop & Stop, Giant, Tops, Bruno’s, BiLo, and Peapod. This distribution network employs hundreds of drivers.

From the company's freestanding warehouses and warerooms, Peapod trucks fan out each day to make deliveries into neighborhoods around the country. For a fee as low as $5.95, most customers can place orders for delivery as soon as next-day (within a two-hour window) or even days or weeks in advance.
