ADS Pipe Used in $1.5 Billion I-15 Project

SALT LAKE CITY -- The $1.5-billion design-build I-15 project here is relying on smooth-lined, corrugated polyethylene pipe, not only to confidently channel water from the roadbed, but to help complete the project in time for the 2002 Winter Olympics. Delay penalties start at $50 million.

Lightweight, the Advanced Drainage Systems (ADS) corrugated polyethylene pipe can be easily handled with minimal equipment by a one- or two-person crew, providing a favorable alternative to concrete pipe. The PE-pipe's long 'stick' length reduces the number of joints needed, which also saves labor and installation time. More than 33 miles of ADS pipe, mostly 24-inch and 30-inch diameter, is being used for the storm drain system.

Wasatch Constructors estimates ADS PE pipe will save some 15 percent in materials, labor and time costs, compared with concrete pipe.

ADS N-12 ProLink Ultra® pipe series with an integral bell and spigot to provide a secure gravity drain system is being used. Even the largest sections can be easily 'popped' together with the F477-qualified gasket providing the seal and an audible fit.

The pipe is manufactured at ADS' regional manufacturing plant in northern Salt Lake City. Delivery from a local plant was another reason the contractors on this challenging job selected ADS. Compared to other types of pipe, more sections of PE pipe can be put on each truck load. "This reduces costs because fewer trucks are needed. It also means less traffic, which can enhance safety," explained Tony Radoszewski, director of marketing for Advanced Drainage Systems. "It's typical for us to deliver 960 to 1080 feet of pipe on one truck load."
