Increased Square Footage Will Support Ace’s Growth in Western States

Ace Hardware Corp. has announced plans to expand its existing 500,000 square foot state-of-the-art retail distribution center in Colorado Springs, Colo., by nearly 50 percent in response to growing sales and an increasing number of Ace retailers in the Western region. Construction is scheduled to start April 1.

The expansion of the Colorado Springs facility, which currently boasts 85 doors for shipping and receiving inventory, will increase its capacity by 225,000 square feet and will add another 40 doors. The total square footage of the facility will jump to 725,000 square feet, and the facility will continue to serve Ace retailers in Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, Wyoming and parts of Utah.

“This expansion will allow us to better serve the needs of our retailers, enabling them to continue to provide optimum service to their customers,” said Ace’s Vice President of Retail Support – West Bill Bauman. “The larger facility also enables Ace to handle the increased sales and an ever-increasing body of retailers in the region.” The current workforce at the Colorado Springs facility will continue to process orders during the construction project, which will be completed in December.

“At maximum capacity, the expanded facility will be capable of warehousing between $40 and $50 million of inventory,” said Bauman.

Ace’s retail support centers receive warehouse shipments of products from thousands of manufacturers. The products are sorted to fill customized orders received from retailers and then shipped to those stores.

Upon completion, the Colorado Springs Retail Support Center, which opened in 1996 and is located at 5520 Astrozon Blvd., will cover an area as large as 20 football fields and will feature the latest in warehousing and distribution technology. The facility will be in operation seven days a week, 362 days a year.

Ace Hardware currently operates 15 retail support centers in the United States.

Founded in 1924 and headquartered in Oak Brook, Ill., Ace Hardware Corp. is the largest retailer-owned cooperative in the industry and celebrates its 80th anniversary in 2004. Ace’s annual retail sales from its more than 4,800 hardware, home center and lumber and building materials retailers top $13 billion. Ace has stores located in all 50 states and 70 countries.
