DAVID To Donate Nutritious Sunflower Seeds To National Children’s Charity For Every Home Run Hit During the 2005 Season – 5,451 Hit Last Year!
TAMPA, FL., March 10 — Derek Jeter joined in announcing a campaign by DAVID® Seeds that will provide nutritious snacks to aid children in need. During the 2005 regular season, for every home run hit by a player, DAVID will donate a case of sunflower seeds* to Kids Cafe® – a program run by America's Second Harvest - The Nation's Food Bank Network across the country. When Jeter hits a home run, DAVID will donate 100 cases of seeds to Kids Cafe and to Turn 2 Foundation signature programs in New York City, West Michigan and Tampa, Florida. Last year, there were 5,451 home runs hit during the season. The announcement took place during a ceremony to honor Jeter for establishing his Turn 2 Foundation, which creates and supports signature programs and activities that motivate young people to turn away from drugs and alcohol and "turn 2" healthy lifestyles. To recognize his commitment to nutritious snacking, DAVID’s unveiled a 10-foot tall replica of its new Derek Jeter Sunflower Seed bag, which features a spitting image of the All-Star shortstop. Jeter was also presented with the first-ever DAVID Good Seed award. This award goes to an individual who dedicates his/her time to helping others achieve a healthy, wholesome and responsible lifestyle. "Teaming with DAVID is a natural combination – it’s all about baseball and the importance of healthy snacking," said Derek Jeter. "It’s a great feeling knowing that every home run I hit this season means DAVID will donate sunflower seeds to kids in need." Sunflower seeds are an excellent source of vitamin E, are high in protein and are great for a low carb lifestyle. Sunflower seeds naturally contain a high amount of vitamin E (7.4 mg per 1 oz serving), an important nutrient which is currently very low in both children's and adults' diets1.
"DAVID is thrilled to be honoring Derek Jeter with the Good Seed award and we are excited about the opportunity to partner with someone who not only leads a healthy lifestyle, but encourages others to do the same," said Ann Mamer- Lloyd, DAVID Brand Director. Jeter will appear on the DAVID Original, Ranch and Bar-B-Q sunflower seed bags and on the Travel Cup, a plastic cup with a 4.5oz bag of seeds inside, which serves as a convenient seed container. The new bags and Travel Cups will begin rolling out nationwide in March.
